So, you’ve picked up The Demonologist, the game where ghost hunting gets as terrifying as it is addictive. But unless you’re a seasoned demon-whisperer, staring at that arsenal of tools in your inventory can feel more overwhelming than a spirit in your face.
Don’t sweat it—we’ve got you covered. This guide will break down every item, how to use it, and some tips to ensure you’re not the one screaming for the exit.
Ready to conquer the haunt? Let’s dive in.
Here’s the ghost-busting gear you’ll be wielding in The Demonologist:
We’ll take you through each one—what it does, how it works, and why it’ll either save your butt or get you closer to the ghost’s good side (spoiler: don’t aim for the second).
The EMF Detector is like your early warning system for ghostly activity. This handheld device measures electromagnetic fields, with a scale ranging from 1 to 5.
A level 5 spike usually means the ghost is throwing a tantrum.
When to use it: Right out of the gate. Wander through the map, checking for areas where the EMF spikes. Those are your ghost’s favorite hangout spots.
Pro tip: Keep your cool when it hits 5. Panicking is a great way to become ghost chow. I suggest meditative cockroach watching.
If you’re dying to know what’s on the ghost’s mind (and maybe dying in general), the Spirit Box is your best bet. This little device lets ghosts speak to you in real-time—if they’re feeling chatty.
When to use it: In dark rooms. Ask the ghost questions and listen closely for eerie one-word responses.
Pro tip: Use specific questions like “Where are you?” or “How old are you?” Just don’t expect a funderful heart-to-heart.
This creepy monocle lets you see ectoplasm splatters left behind by ghosts. Think of it as the ghost’s way of leaving you a trail… or a very gross signature.
When to use it: Scan walls, floors, and objects in the suspected ghost room. Look for those glowy splatters.
Pro tip: Pair it with the UV Flashlight to double-check areas. Sometimes ghosts are messier than toddlers with finger paint.
The Thermometer helps you pinpoint freezing temperatures, a dead giveaway of certain ghost types. It’s not flashy, but it’s reliable.
When to use it: Early on, when scoping out potential ghost rooms. Look for temps dropping below freezing.
Pro tip: If you see your breath, congrats! You’ve found the freezer aisle… and probably the ghost.
The UV Flashlight is your best friend for finding ghost fingerprints. If the ghost has been touching where it shouldn’t, this light will expose the evidence.
When to use it: After a ghost event or when you’ve seen a door move or heard a light switch flick.
Pro tip: Check both sides of doors. Ghosts are weirdly into redecorating.
The Crucifix is your last line of defense against getting throttled by an angry ghost.
When to use it: Hold onto it for dear life if you’re within hunting range.
Pro tip: Carry it preemptively and don’t drop it – it’s not Phasmophobia! Waiting for a ghost to start hunting is a rookie move since some ghost behavior will change whether or not you can defend yourself.
Set up the Video Camera to catch ghosts in the act. You can use it to keep an eye on haunted areas from a (relatively) safe spot.
When to use it: Once you’ve identified the ghost room, plop this bad boy down on a tripod for optimal coverage over your ESG or Easel Canvas.
Pro tip: Care while you’re being a chicken and watching the video feed – your sanity doesn’t feel as comfortable as you may in the tent and you might be in for a “oh damn” moment when you walk back into the house.
The Photo Camera isn’t just for capturing memories—it’s a crucial tool for earning extra cash.
When to use it: Anytime you’ve got a mission to take a picture of something.
Pro tip: You’re pretty much forced to take a camera into every map in case of potential stage 2 missions. Good times…
Candles provide light without messing up your ghost’s ambiance.
When to use it: In dark rooms or hallways where you want light but don’t want to provoke the ghost.
Pro tip: Relight candles if the ghost decides to blow them out. I’m looking at you, Myling – Rude.
Sanity Pills restore your… well, sanity. Staying sane keeps you alive longer. Pretty straightforward.
When to use it: When your sanity drops below 50%. Lower sanity means you’re more likely to get hunted.
Pro tip: Don’t hoard them. Share with teammates to keep everyone in the game. If you’re playing by yourself, you can generally be a little more casual with use, but I try not to use more than 1 per investigation stage.
The ESG is a high-tech gadget that forces the ghost to reveal itself for a few seconds. Think of it as your ghostly spotlight.
When to use it: Place it in the ghost’s favorite hangout spots and wait for activity.
Pro tip: Stay close but not too close. Also, they added some voice interaction with this to try and increase engagement so try saying “Show yourself” a bunch of times before writing this off.
This eerie canvas lets ghosts channel their inner Picasso. If a ghost is present, it might leave a drawing.
When to use it: Set it up in high-activity areas where ghost sightings are frequent.
Pro tip: Keep an eye on it—ghosts work fast, and you don’t want to miss the masterpiece.
The Fulu charm takes spirits and cranks their interaction rates up to 11.
When to use it: When you’re having trouble getting some evidence, this could be helpful to try and get that ESG or UV that you’ve been waiting for the last 25 minutes.
Pro tip: Don’t rely on it too much—you’ll dull your investigatory edge just normally trying to find evidence and could increase sanity drain with interactions and events.
The Sledgehammer is your go-to for smashing through cracked walls…or more specifically wall.
When to use it: After you have found the cracked wall during the mission on Cyclone Street.
Pro tip: At this point this is literally ONLY relevant in Cyclone Street, on the second stage IF you have the mission to break the wall and burn the bag.
There is no other point in the game where you can use this and it’s not 100% chance that you’re going to get this quest…so there’s that.
This classic ghost-hunting tool creates a circle of salt that ghosts can’t cross. Great for securing areas and giving off those Sam Winchester vibes.
When to use it: At choke points or around key locations.
Pro tip: Lay it down strategically—salt is limited, so make it count.
The Pocket Watch is a passive item that, well….tells the time.
That’s it.
When to use it: Really only useful during the Bedlam Exorcist or while hunting a Yokai since they identify as “time sensitive”.
Pro tip: It’s a watch. There’s really no other revelations here, sorry!
With this guide in hand, you’re ready to dive into The Demonologist with confidence. Master these items, and you’ll go from ghost bait to paranormal pro in no time.

No worries at all Xander, glad it helped! I’ll try to come out with some more stuff soon, but I’m hoping they come up with another update sooner than later.

I was wondering what the sledgehammer did tbh

Yeahhh, the sledgehammer’s usage is honestly a bit underwhelming but it’s still kinda cool that they’re trying some new stuff. Who knows, maybe they’ll go back and give the other maps some stuff you can do with it later on?
Thanks for dropping by Oreos!
